Bud Powell - The Classic Recordings 1957-1959

Bud Powell - The Classic Recordings 1957-1959

Remembered as one of the most troubled yet inspirational figures in jazz, pianist Bud Powell has influenced every likeminded pianist within the jazz idiom since his heyday. In stark contrast to other piano players of the era however, Powell primarily emulated the playing of saxophonist Charlie Parker in his work, bringing a unique approach to his instrument. Heavily influenced too by the music of Art Tatum, Earl Hines and Billy Kyle, Powell’s thrilling solos, excellent timing and fearless approach to improvisation left a significant mark on the bebop era and in turn, through a series of legendary albums as bandleader, influenced generations of jazz players to come.
The mid to late 1950s was a trying time for Powell. In 1956, his younger brother, fellow pianist Richie Powell, was killed in a car crash at the age of 24, alongside the acclaimed trumpeter Clifford Brown; the pair had been touring and recording together since 1954. In addition, Powell’s long standing psychological problems continued to worsen, and his prescribed medication was now having an increasingly detrimental effect on his playing.
However, Powell did not lose his natural talent, and throughout the rest of the decade he produced a number of classic records. These included Bud Powell Trio (Roost, 1957), Blues In The Closet (Verve, 1958) and The Lonely One… (Verve, 1959), which boasted appearances from George Duvivier, Art Taylor, Ray Brown, Osie Johnson and Max Roach. Duvivier and Taylor had previously featured on Swingin’ With Bud (RCA Victor, 1957), while The Scene Changes: The Amazing Bud Powell, Vol. 5 (Verve, 1959), saw Powell backed by esteemed bassist Paul Chambers.
Powell moved to Paris in 1960 and continued to record sporadically. He made a live appearance in Germany the same year which would appear on The Essen Jazz Festival All Stars (Fantasy, 1964), and featured as a side man to Dexter Gordon on Our Man In Paris (Blue Note, 1963). By this time Powell had almost lost the ability to learn or compose new material, but remained in fine form when performing older pieces, as was evident from his final album as bandleader, the Duke Ellington-produced Bud Powell In Paris (Reprise, 1964).
Bud contracted tuberculosis in 1963 and moved back to New York. While there he played a few high profile shows, including an engagement at the famous Birdland jazz club with drummer Horace Arnold and bassist John Ore. Powell, but was back in hospital by 1966. He passed away at the age of 41 on 31st July, due to a combination of tuberculosis, alcoholism and malnutrition.
This four disc collection brings together the last great installment of Bud Powell’s career, when the sheer brilliance of his talent was still apparent. Collating eight albums in total containing over five hours of music, this set will serve as a poignant reminder of one of the finest pianists the world has ever witnessed.
