Elvis Presley - A Song For The King

Elvis Presley - A Song For The King

Fame and celebrity being what they are, it is no surprise when the famous and celebrated are championed by the virtually unknown. And when such behavior is channeled through the medium of song, the results can be truly horrific. Luckily, however, ‘tribute records’ are generally few and far between and even the most notorious of artists can feel honored if just one solitary cheese-fest of musical praise is composed in their name. But when one Elvis Aaron Presley, of Memphis, Tennessee, stepped up to the mic in the early mid-1950s, and in so doing blew the dust off Mars, the genre was re-born. Pencils were sharpened at publishers from Tin Pan Alley to Denmark Street and, anyone who could hum a tune or rhyme ‘super’ with ‘duper’ had a job waiting. So it’s hardly surprising that, while tributes about the average global superstar would be hard-pushed to fill one side of a 45, there are enough relating toThe King to fill a CD compilation such as this.
What may come as more of a shock is that leftovers, rejected for this edition, could complete another 4 or 5 discs without going near anything that is essentially a cover version rather than a true tribute, or recordings as awful as, say, Danny Mirror’s 1977 hit ‘I Remember Elvis Presley’. Indeed, for the first time ever, the’29 obscure Elvis tributes ’ cramming this disc to near overflow, although not always in the finest taste and occasionally with a faint whiff of Gorgonzola, are never less than fascinating, regularly hilarious, sometimes inspiring and now and then truly wonderful.
