Genevieve Waite - Romance Is On The Rise

Originally released in 1974, Romance Is On The Rise is actually a collaboration between Genevieve Waite and her (now) late husband, Mammas and The Pappas mainstay John Phillips – writer of such classic pop tunes as California Dreaming, Monday Monday and Creeque Alley. Phillips produced and wrote virtually all the material on his second wife’s only solo album (he married Genevieve after his break up with Mammas co vocalist Michelle Phillips).She was better known as an actress at the time but this album is a gorgeous set of songs harking back to the classic era of George Gershwin and Cole Porter (indeed, a cover of Poter’s ‘Slumming On Park Avenue’ is the original album’s sole cover version). The songs were later turned into a Broadway musical called ‘Man In The Moon’ produced by Andy Warhol and featuring Waite in the central role. Although distribution problems at the time caused the album to suffer commercially, critical acclaim was abundant and the record was voted in at number 98 on Paul Gambaccini’s ‘Top 200 albums of all time’, a book published in 1978 and the first of its kind –appearing long before the rise of the British rock monthlies who have taken to collating such lists on a regular basis. Now reissued for the first time since the vinylmid 70’s release, complete with 4 bonus tracks not on the original (including a superb version of The Velvets’ ‘Femme Fatale’), the time has come to get this forgotten materpiece back on the radar.
