Steve Marriott - Astoria Memorial Concert

When Steve Marriott, former brainchild behind The Small Faces and co-writer of some of pop's most soulful tunes, was tragically killed in a fire in 1991, the possibility of a tribute concert was immediately mooted, and preparations were underway within a month. Ten years to the day, London's Astoria was packed to the rafters with a large number of his still dedicated fans. The stars were there as well, Paul Weller and Noel Gallagher played an acoustic set of Small Faces classics. Midge Ure performed a haunting, solo-acoustic 'My Mind's Eye' and the house band included some huge names, including the surviving Small Faces. This DVD, now finally released after delays, captures this classic celebration of Steve Marriott's musical legacy with perfection. It reminds us just how important he was and how inspiring to the musicians and songwriters of his own and subsequent generations. Both the concert and this film benefit the 'Small Faces Children's Charity', all performers giving their time and effort for no financial gain. Best of all, watching this event now makes us part of the night, whether or not we attended, when those that cared raised a glass or three to a legend. Bar sales at the Astoria broke all records that night. That just about says it all.
