The Beatles - The Walrus Was Ringo
When it comes to the pub pop quiz, everyone’s a Beatles expert. Or at least they think they are. But as this book reveals, a lot of what’s been written is untrue. Even the ‘final word’ on the subject – as documented by ¾ of the band in the form of 2000’s Anthology autobiography – can be proven inaccurate. Esteemed Beatles experts Alan Clayson and Spencer Leigh have spent several years interviewing thousands of individuals from across The Beatles’ story, and finally dissecting truth from fiction. The Walrus Was Ringo collects together 101 short essays savaging some of the most commonly held beliefs about the most famous band ever. For instance, myths exploded include: The Beatles never recorded together again after the Abbey Road sessions in 1970; ‘Yesterday’ was a completely original work by Paul McCartney; John Lennon was a ‘Working Class Hero’; Stuart Sutcliffe died from a brain problem after being beaten up by John Lennon; Pete Best played a fairly insignificant role in the history of The Beatles; The Beatles and other Merseybeat acts heard the obscure American R&B tracks they’d cover from records brought into Liverpool by merchant seamen and more. Every one of these statements, and 95 others in a similar vein, is untrue – and this book proves it.
