Ben Webster - The Complete Recordings 1952-1959
Often referred to as The Brute due to his trademark rasps and growls, Ben Webster was considered one of the holy trinity of swing tenor saxophonists, alongside Coleman Hawkins and Lester Young. Despite the abrasive nature of his signature tone, Webster was also known for his tender and emotive ballad style, as well as his Jekyll-and-Hyde personality that often went in tandem with his level of sobriety. Regardless of his unpredictable nature however, he was held in high esteem by his contemporaries and his vast output contributed to his becoming one of the most commercially successful saxophonists of all time.
This collection brings together the complete recorded work - including something of a rarity, his 1952 10 release Tenor Sax Stylings (Vogue) - of Ben Webster as leader, throughout his most celebrated period. Spread over four discs, lovingly remastered and featuring more than four and a half hours of music, in completion this boxed set will form the definitive compilation of the earliest recordings by one of jazzs most talented and unique performers.
