I'm Going Slightly Mad - Music From The Dark Side Of The Mind

I'm Going Slightly Mad - Music From The Dark Side Of The Mind

In the hothouse of pop, there have bloomed songs about mental abnormality as regularly as the appearances of the twin roses of madness resulting from the red-hot cauterising iron applied to shaved scalps as a would-be cure for the malady up to the age of Queen Victoria.
Indeed, perhaps a level of lunacy is prerequisite when attempting a career in the often less than sane world of song-composition, and when subject matter overlaps with the darker personality traits, the creative process can bring about some truly disturbing results.
This extraordinary collection brings together 29 of the most disturbed songs ever written. With the sub-texts ranging from the effects of too much stimulant (‘Speed Crazy’ by Slick Slavin), all the way to the darkest subject of all, the taking of one’s own life, as represented here on Billie Holiday’s frightening ‘Gloomy Sunday’ and on the somewhat more tongue in cheek, ‘Suicide’ from Louie Innis or ‘ the rockin’ but dour ’I think I’m Gonna Kill Myself’ by Buddy Knox. The cause of more mental imbalance than any other – the loss of love - is of course given much coverage here too, and while not the comfiest listen ever compiled this fascinating and eclectic collection of tracks also serves as a reminder that there’s always someone worse off than yourself.
