Roland Kirk - Complete Recordings 1956-1962

Roland Kirk - Complete Recordings 1956-1962

In a life cut tragically short at the age of 42, Rahsaan Roland Kirk is a well known figure in Jazz circles, perhaps best known outside of that for his ability to play several instruments simultaneously.
Although considered a gimmick and novelty act by some, this did not take anything away from the fact that he was an incredible virtuoso and multi instrumentalist, capable of circular breathing and dazzling audiences with 16th note runs at high speed and of almost unlimited length.
He could also play practically any wind instrument to a very proficient degree, and made some of his own, although his main work comprised mainly of him on saxes, clarinets and flutes.
Born as Ronald Theodore Kirk in Columbus, Ohio in 1935, he felt compelled by dreams to change his name more than once until 1970 when he was known as he is today as Rahsaan Roland Kirk.
His playing was mostly centred around soul-jazz and hard bop, although having studiously absorbed many historical and avant-garde influences, Kirk was able to use swing, free jazz, classical, and pop styles within his works.
He was politically outspoken, and many live shows were punctuated with topical issues, laced often with his satirist and absurdist humour.
Undoubtedly Kirk would have gone onto influence the musical and Jazz world even more had he lived longer than the second stroke which claimed his life in 1977, having previously suffered a major one in 1975 which led to partial paralysis of one side of his body. It certainly is a true testament to the man that he continued to perform and record, tour internationally and even still managing to play two instruments.
This Collection presents a full overview of Kirks heyday works from 1956-62, with him at the helm as well appearing as the main sideman with a number of well known artists. A great compilation, and a definitive account of an often overlooked and underappreciated genius in Jazz's rich legacy.
